The Sogn Fjord Museum – located by the old ferry quay at Kaupanger.
Sogn Fjord Museum is a separate section of The Heiberg Collections. The Fjord Museum is located by the Kaupanger ferry quay, a five-minute drive from the main location of the museum. In this new building you will find objects that can be directly linked to the fjord and life by the fjord.
On the premises you will also find the Glavær cottage, an old tavern from Glavær in the municipality of Gulen with the oldest bar in Sogn!
The fjord was of vital importance to the villages in Sogn in former times. The fjord was both the main artery and a substantial source of food, and in order to get a full understanding of life in the villages and hamlets along the Sognefjord, a visit to Sogn Fjord Museum is a must. It is a modern museum which will give visitors an interesting experience of the fjord culture. The museum contains a unique collection of boats from Sogn. You will also find a reconstruction of a boat-builder's workshop with tools. Besides, there is a fine collection of traditional fishing gear of all types.
Sognafæringen – a video presentation made by the museum.
In 1983 the museum documented how the local boat-builder Svein Henjesand built a sognafæring (rowboat) by using traditional methods. An edited version of the documentation lasting 28 minutes can be seen by clicking here...
